Rival national newspaper editors are expected to present a united front
Until the Leveson report came out, editors of several papers including the Daily Mail were arguing for continued self-regulation, if they could levy fines of £1m and introduce a more independent board. However, this plan still included a place on the board for serving editors.
The prime minister has expressed "serious concerns and misgivings" about Lord Justice Leveson's recommendation of legislative underpinning for a new press regulator.
in my opinion
the regulations on the media wont make a difference as now all have their own choices through web 2.0 by using social networking and that a platform where individuals  are able to get there  voice heard this refers to the hegemony as the capitalist have the upper power and dominate the media that individuals thoughts don't really count

Wednesday 5 December 2012

article mentions the move from web 1.0 to 2.0 has bought a much broader media revolution
Services such as YouTube, Blogs etc. are now free and available for anyone to use
as ordinary people have their says and opinions/views of what's happening and can publish them through web 2.0 and get reply backs, while sharing on-line sites which are free and open. these things can lead to turn in to fundamental shifts in operation's of old media such as the television.
First Question
what's new?
change of the media has allowed ordinary people to get involved and answer back the media whereas before web 1.0 news was provided through television and radios which was injected into the audience and audeince only had an acceptance. however it seen as there is danger of technological determinism the idea that technology will bring about social change
impact depends on how they are used and by who

who's participating
Digital divides, the younger people who are using social networking
striking social inequalities in participation some gender differences
women are leading to bloging
men tend to dominate videos by sharing

who is participating
technology is shifting power way from the editors, the publisher
establishments and the media who are taking control
(marx capitalist system)

Who's doing work
marketing

Participation debates - media
biggest debates
democracy is the form of government in which all eligible people have a say in making a decision
modern media landscape
Now the digital revolution web 2.0 has given users he opportunity to not just be the audience but to communicate ideas globally through social networking

nternet has empowered its users by giving them unparalleled instant and almost unmediated access to unfolding news stories from a variety of sources, bypassing the hegemonic institutions that control the dominant media discourses in society.
Indian village bars women from using mobiles phones

A village council in eastern India banned women using mobiles phone
they said that mobile phones pollute the social atmosphere by encouraging women to elope with lovers
there are penalties range from 10,000 rupees (£115)
2,000 rupees for married women
they can only use a phone in the presence of a male family member.

combination of marginally improved education will take place with no phones and no eloping
more mobility access has led to traditional authority of fathers, husbands and male village leaders

I think this is wrong and the eastern indian's are being strict also this keeps to a male dominant society and is patriarchal for women as they are controlled by men
whereas, men can use phone and also have affairs which seems to be unfair and biased society.

What representation of young people in London do we see in the opening of Kidulthood
We see a negative and over-exaggerated representation of young people in London as we see different type of daily reality’s happening all crammed into one scene of the opening which is over exaggerated as not all of the situations which took place happen at the same time this therefore explains the fast pacing movement of camera and edits fitting all the young people into once scene.
Is it a fair representation?
I don’t think that the opening scene is a fair representation as it portrays all young people as stereotyped to fit into their label of negative. As we see working class young people all fighting, swearing and arguing throughout the first 10 minutes of the scene. Whereas, it is a fair representation as we see all teenagers hanging around talking and gossiping before lessons.
Is it a good example of verisimilitude?
This is a good example of verisimilitude as what audience expect of young people that is what kidulthood has put together as young people are seen as violent and damaging creatures using slang over and over again which shows that as an audience we accept that this film is true to life as these are various things we see young people do and it contains true facts about young people in London

BBC George Entwistle's

George Entwistle's
Should not resign as a Director general as in his defence he had to send out news and give audience information of some sort, that the public was waiting for also he was only working for 54 days at the public broadcaster which covers his mistake as he was a new worker in the broadcast sector/
He should be given a chance or be removed as director manager post and drop down. As he was only doing his job and what a news reporter/ public broadcasters does. However, because of the wide spread of rumours and the case that he has put such a high brand BBC down there should be another director general at his post and he should be removed because of the mistake he’s made as a director general has huge politically responsibility.
He can survive it but I think he's made it very difficult for himself. Also towards the end their will be a change of director general in order to not make the same mistake as now

Twitter and tweets should not be closed as important updates which are made cross over to young teenagers and adults who use twitter as well as a way of giving their opinion to what they think. However, the tweeters that tweeted information similar to George Entwistle’s should be at least are receiving a warning of or some type of punishment.
News night should not be shut down because it has been successful over the upcoming years which has informed and educated as well as entertained public with its up-coming news for one mistake it shouldn't be shut down, however, they should be receiving a tagged fine

MP demands apology after abusive tweets are traced to Wonga employee
Guardian uncovers evidence that employee of online lender abused anti-payday loans campaigner Stella Creasy on Twitter
The MP and anti-payday loans campaigner Stella Creasy has demanded an apology from the online lender Wonga after a Guardian investigation uncovered evidence that an employee of the firm has been using an anonymous Twitter account to publicly attack her, calling her mentally unstable.

Young people in London

"A Negative representation is better than no representation at all"
Discuss this statement with reference to the group or place you have studied

The young riots were represented as negative side, the media was a negative voice for the young youths in London.

- Media injected people and audience accepted that youths in London are groups of criminals and riots
whereas we don't know what specifically types of youths the media is aiming as in the riots 2011 different ethnicity  ages, genders, class were involved and that's why its stereotyped all young people in London

- Over exaggeration of the media in a negative response which led to moral panics and news values relating to young people

-Hegemony is controlling people to stay in their place therefore giving youths negative representation to keep society distracted.

No representation IS better than no representation as it enables young youths to start again and build up a new representation of themselves rather than accepting the different type of stereotypes - they can also reject the self-fulfilling prophecy and change their label that the media has given them through the news values

Example- riots have been portrayed negatively through the 3 media platforms especially newspapers and social networking which is seen as the madness of the whole creation.

US election 2012

the hug photo makes social media history, as a photograph of Obama embracing his wife
became the mos liked and re-tweeted post ever!

Obama posted an image at 0416 GMT, claiming victory over Mitt Romney in the US presidential race. Since then it has been re-tweeted nearly 700,000 times. More than 3.23 million people have liked the image on Facebook, with over 400,000 shares; more than 100,000 today were liking it every hour.
The unprecedented viral success of the post confirmed the role that social media played in the US presidential campaign.. In the past, election night ended when the losing candidate phoned the winner to concede defeat, with news of the call promptly leaked to news media.

31 million election-related tweets on Tuesday night, making election night "the most tweeted about event in U.S. political history,

Summary
the new digital media takes a huge role as this picture has been tweeted and liked on Facebook shows how much social websites are important,

To what extent do you agree with Judith Butler's theory that Gender roles are socially constructed? Use example from media research in your response.

Gender is the different biological sex we have in today's society such as males and females and gender refers to how it categories are constructed. Butlers theory argues that he gender roles are he performance and that it is socially constructed, this means society creates their own meanings and expects everyone to follow the norms and values. Primary socialisation is a very important part of life as through primary socialisation which mainly takes place in the house it is the acceptance and learning of a set of norms an values and processes through socialisation, it happened during childhood where a child learns the attitudes and actions as a member of a particular culture. Society interprets through gender toys and colours. An example of this is parents of a young boy might give toys to their child such as trucks, cars and footballs to play or make the do outdoor activities and dress them up in blue. Whereas, the parents of a girl will give her toys such as dolls, read books to her and dress her up in clothes such as dresses and in pink.
However gender roles are not socially constructed. In Parsons view traditional gender roles make the women as the housewife doing the inside housework, socialising the children and the husband is seen as the breadwinner and a strong independent who provides for the family as his wife and children are dependent on him. However in today’s society women are also becoming breadwinners and taking independent role such as providing for the family. McRobbie compares magazines which are aims at women and young teenagers from the 1980 and 1990’s , she researched that over the years women changed their view about their future and started to become more independent, whereas, before they would just accept the role of a housewife and get married. This therefore, gave women an empowering view.
Parents choose to put their children in different colours of clothes such as boys in blue, and girls in pink this is because society is socially constructed and they follow up what society expects them to do. This relates to Butlers theory as society creates their own meaning and wxoects everyone to follow the norms and values as if parents dressed their daughter into blue clothes and gave her toys such as toy cars society will assume that the child is a boy by just looking at her. Judith’s Butler argues that gender roles are socially constructed this is because it depends on the persons own choice and the way they are influenced by society and secondly the media also nowadays the media is a crucial part of peoples live as in secondary socialisation they see norms and values which are expected through schools and media, such as: they would see make-up on girls very common and wearing latest type of clothing will fit them into society this is because they socially construct this meaning and attach it to their values.
As breaking a norm or value will make society react differently to an individual for example if a boy wears a dress with tight clothing’s and tights, members of society will act different towards the person. This involves stereotypes which means a fixed image or idea about a person or a group and labelling them can lead to individuals accepting it as stereotyping their gender as being feminine will encourage them to take it on and accept it as an individual or the individual might reject it by changing the way he/she is dressed. Butler argues that gender is socially constructed and this is due mainly to primary socialisation as that is what everyone learns in a young age. Also some may accept that society is treating them to reject the self-fulfilling prophecy and changing the label that someone has given for example, at school a child might be very lazy and arrogant and the teacher might label them as a failure, some individuals will reject the self-fulfilling prophecy and go against it and prove by working harder, not being lazy and gaining another positive reward rather than negative, whereas some may just accept it and reject it and accept its sub-culture that the person is a failure,
In conclusion, society is socially constructed as young generation is expected to behave by accepting to play with the toys they are given as is automatically enables their gender to be constructed
should behave and by accepting to play with these toys automatically enables their gender to be constructed with what toy they play with and how they respond. In addition, by dividing the way we socially construct genders can be criticized by Judith Butler as she believes that it divides society in to boys and girls.

Amazon to be stripped of tax advantage on e-book sale
European commission tells Luxembourg to end VAT loophole, a decision that could close the gap with British ebook price

Amazon is registered as a Luxembourg company and pays that country's VAT charge of 3% when it sells an eBook to a British reader, rather than the 20% it would have to charge if it were UK-based
Amazon is now expected to contest the contest the commission ruling so no impact on the cost of the ebooks bought from the UK website

The UK has held out at the full 20% VAT rate, which has a detrimental impact on the UK industry. The EC's move will seek to end these anomalies and tax competition amongst member states, and comes under pressure from member states' ministers of finance

angry birds game have monthly 200 million active players
in any given day, we have 20-30 million people playing angry games connected

in the beginning of 2012 Angry birds game had been downloaded more than 1 billion times.
around 20-30 million people play this game connected
compared to other social games such as giant zynga has 306 million users monthly
the next release of the game which is ANGRY BIRDS STAR WARS which will be launched on 8 November
this is set to be a success as there are so many fans of angry birds as well as star wars

Man gets community sentence for Facebook post about dead soldiers
Azhar Ahmed must do 240 hours of community service after writing on Facebook: 'All soldiers should die and go to hell'

Azhar Ahmed, 20, from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire gets a community sentence for two years
for posting a message on Facebook after two days after the death of the soldiers in march this year
he accepts that he has posted this comment but does not think it was offensive
however courts final decisions were set as a district judge found him guilty as it is a offensive communication and comment to make so his punishment is to to community sentence and told to pay costs of £300 by the magistrates.

Ahmed made his comments on the social networking site two days later, he wrote that: "People gassin about the deaths of Soldiers! What about the family's who've been brutally killed. The women who have been raped. The children who have been sliced up!" He went on to be abusive about soldiers.

in my opinion the action taking against Azhar Ahmed is partly right as no one should make such a harsh comment about anyone especially soldiers whereas its not much of his fault as he did realize his mistake and did remove the comment.

To what extent do you agree with Rosin's Hypothesis that women are taking over modern society

Disagree;
The article ignores that many single mothers who are bringing up children lack the farther figure
and therefore do a similar thing and be influenced by the people who they are living with
e.g. might walk out on their partner
have negative views towards relationship
lack in school this links to martial deprivation and cultural deprivation
mother might have less time for their child

- Roles have become more equalled now we find couples who share out equal responsibility of tasks and roles
Old breadwinner label has vanished society has headed towards equality

- Now there a new men who do household roles

- some women do the triple shift; household work, emotional support and outside work

women are not worldwide dominant as some women still carry out the old traditional roles
some countries are strict women stay in the household while men go out study and work

Agree

rejects Douglas theory of traditional roles

We've been shown an example of Bethenny a 29 year old women who runs a day care centre, who is also studying to get a nursing degree and raising up a 10 year old daughter
this shows that most single mothers have taken over all responsibility and are capable to manage themselves

- Dual Burden
- Double shift

In her research
three-quarters of 7.5 million jobs were lost by men such as construction, manufacturing, high finance

in 2009 workforce tipped towards women
women are worldwide dominate in colleges and in professional schools except Africa (where girls don't get the opportunity to go school)

economy has been changing and women have been becoming equal as well as higher than men in Rosin's research she has included the US economy in some ways becoming a kind of travelling sisterhood; professional women leave
home and enter workforce
In China Women own 40% of the private business

Matriarchy

Post colonialism
Race and ethnicity represented in the two text.

Text One - Olympics
Aldorov theory - racial representation which could be put into exotic shown through music
Negative representation is shown through
Worldwide
Can be accesses through Social networking and other websites e.g. YouTube
We see different ethnicity coming together and celebrating the Olympics

Text two - Article
Positive representation
Article is shown as really pitied and dangerous as in the modern society we don't find educated
white middle aged mother and a black farther living together seen as stereotypical
Links to Fran Janon's theory and shows that the meddle class
are putting on masks as they are a family living together and the two young daughters are going out
in the night partying which doesn't seem suitable

Guardian Article 2

Spam text senders face fines up to £500,000
two people who sent out millions of text offering accident compensation first to be targeted by ICO crackdown

Two people who are responsible for sending out millions of spam text by offering accident compensation and payment protection insuranceAnother eight companies could face similar fines as the data enforcement office concentrates on unsolicited text,

Research shown is most annoying example of unwanted marketing people recivie The case is the first of its kind in which the ICO has used its new powers to levy fines of up to £500,000 for misuse of personal data. It is also illegal to send text marketing messages or automated marketing calls to people who have not opted to receive them from the company involved which also means any company that used the numbers collected from "STOP" texts would be breaking the law.
The individuals, who have not yet been named, have been given 28 days to respond to the ICO to explain how their activities were legal. If they cannot, then a "final penalty notice" will come into force, making them personally liable for the payment.

i agree with this article as spam text has been happening from a long time and it is really annoying  even when it is real solicitors who use text for a query will be ignored by people as people have experienced spam text.

Facebook - BBC news

BBC News
Facebook deleting fake 'likes', independent data suggests
Facebook has begun deleting fake page likes

8.7% of its users are not real many having been set up by spammers who use them to artificially make pages appear more popular. This rises a problem for Facebook as it seeks to expand its targeted advertising service.
In a blog post written in August, Facebook said: "A 'like' that doesn't come from someone truly interested in connecting with a page benefits no-one.
However Facebook does not confirm to the BBC that the purge was happening, but could not provide an alternative explanation for the drop in numbers this because they still want their social website to be the top and positive whereas they are getting negative results
Promoting online engagement with brands is a key component of Facebook's business model
where information such as age, gender and location to target certain advertisements at specific recipients are kept..
However, this system is increasingly coming under threat from a black market of fake "likes", sold in bulk in order to falsely boost a brand's figures.

self evaluation
I used windows movie maker to create a two minutes video which outlined important things about the internet and how it has changed, however there was no sound as it did not allow me to add it and kept breaking down there were also no images. I used information from the previous lessons in media and spoke about what the internet is, how it is bad for example Wikipedia was updated with incorrect information. i had also mentioned the good sides of how the internet is global and is changing due to technology as it is expanding in example we had internet explorer which is now changed and an faster internet page Google chrome is able ti be used, i had used different colors but however the technology was the main part i wasn't able to succeed much
I think that i could have done well if i used more than one software and overcome the problems i had with the sounds and images, but i used different effects of directions where the text would appear on and off. over all i think if i spent time on my production i would have been able to gain more marks and an higher level,

Friday 15 June 2012

51,442,100 Internet users as of June/10, 82.5% of the population
current broadband population has rised up 95.1%

51442100 internet users from june 2010

  • How much information is in circulation on the internet (in gigabytes)?
500 billion gigabytes information is circulated on the internet,  more people join the digital tribe and circulate the internet

  • What proportion of the world’s population can now go online?
About 70% of the information in digital universe is created by individuals, this includes; phone calls, emails, online banking, twitter etc..

  • The number of people who could access the internet in 1995?
9% of internet was accessed in 1995
  • The number of people who can access the internet in today?
694 Million People currently use the internet worldwide

Now, the internet has merged the three forms of communication together. Instead of mailing a letter, a lot of people email each other by using accounts like; Google mail, Hotmail or Skype. it is more quicker and totally free. The internet is a continual on-going process which keeps evolving

Privacy is really important and needed as it is vital to have control about your account and know how much information is going out to other people and how your account has been set to use, an example if Google mail people should have control over this, it makes it possible to see information edit and delete

Culture
Access is given to anyone from any culture with an Internet connection, as technology is changing and increasing, the bounds of what could once been shared across has become endless.

Copy right is not allowed after the law has been passed. The real issue for copyright is filing claims against individual defendants, copyright law isn’t what it was in 1976. The web (and mobile) have all forced the aging statute to evolve in ways that were never expected in a world of digital everything.
The internet has changed the nature of business and organisations by breaking through distance barriers, also allows communication between parts of the organization, supplier and customers, the internet allows communication. It is faster and less expensive than faxing or mailing and calling all over the world
